SINGAPORE — A 55-year-old man was charged on Tuesday (Sept 15) with the murder of a 67-year old man.

The authorities had arrested Chng Hock Choon after they were alerted to a fight along Beach Road at about 3pm on Sunday. They found the victim — identified as Miskiman Maakip — lying motionless on a grass patch near Block 5 upon their arrival.

Miskiman was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and was pronounced dead later that day.

Chng, who is Singaporean, appeared in court through a video link. He was earlier read the charge in Hokkien but said that the charge was not clear to him and wanted it to be read again in Mandarin.

As the capital charge was repeated, Chng remained expressionless and said in Mandarin: “He stole my money”.

District Judge Terence Tay ordered him to be remanded at Complex Medical Centre in Changi Prison for three weeks.

He will return to court on Oct 6.

Several videos of the incident were shared on Facebook. One of them appeared to show paramedics performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim, while a man restrained by several police officers stood a short distance away.

If convicted of murder, Chng could be sentenced to death.
