Man who suspected girlfriend was unfaithful caned her 40 times, took her nude pictures
The victim was given three days of medical leave after being caned by her boyfriend, who suspected she had been unfaithful.
SINGAPORE — Accusing his girlfriend of cheating on him, he demanded that she kneel down on two lighters and threatened to kill her family if she did not comply.
When she did so, he used a rattan cane to whip her bare buttocks about 40 times.
For his actions, the 25-year-old unemployed man was sentenced to seven months’ jail on Friday (July 12). He pleaded guilty to one count of criminal intimidation, one count of insulting her modesty by intruding on her privacy, and one count of causing hurt.
Another five similar charges were taken into consideration for sentencing.
A psychiatrist from the Institute of Mental Health diagnosed him with persistent depressive disorder and borderline personality traits, but opined that his mental disorders did not substantially contribute to his behaviour.
Neither he nor his 22-year-old victim can be named to protect her identities.
The court heard that on March 28 last year, the victim planned to stay the night at his flat, but changed her mind and decided to go home.
However, he did not allow her to leave. He started alleging that she had cheated on him, then told her to strip naked.
He also told her that she wanted to take her naked pictures “since she wanted to be a slut”, before threatening to harm her family members unless she followed his instructions.
She gave in and allowed him to take nude photographs of her on his mobile phone, which he showed to her. He also threatened to send the photographs to other people if she did not listen to his orders in the future, and slapped her on the face with the mobile phone.
Two days later, he again accused her of being unfaithful to him.
He told her to kneel down on two lighters, with one lighter beneath each knee. While she was doing so, he started to use a cane to hit her arms and right thigh.
Then, he gave her the option of letting him continue to cane her, or he would go to her house to make a mess. She chose the first option as she feared for her family’s safety.
He then asked her to lie down on his bed, ordered her to remove her shorts and panties, and proceeded to use a 69cm-long rattan cane to whip her buttocks. The victim counted silently that she was whipped about 40 times.
Her mother lodged a police report the next day.
The victim went to the Singapore General Hospital for medical treatment on April 3, where she was given three days of medical leave.
In sentencing the man, District Judge Jasvender Kaur said: “What I find significant is the motivation behind the offending behaviour. He wanted to ensure compliance to his demands."
He will begin serving his sentence on July 31, as his lawyer told the court he was recently hired as a GrabFood rider and had accepted advance orders.
