Mixed reactions to Yaw Shin Leong's expulsion

The expulsion of Yaw Shin Leong from the Workers' Party (WP) has sparked mixed reactions among Hougang residents.

SINGAPORE : The expulsion of Yaw Shin Leong from the Workers' Party (WP) has sparked mixed reactions among Hougang residents.

Mr Yaw was elected Member of Parliament for Hougang SMC in the last General Election.

One Hougang resident said: "Basically I think for Mr Yaw's case, he should be treated differently. (We) have to look at a more macro perspective rather than a micro perspective. In terms of his personal life, we should not mix with the current situation right now.

"I think he should be treated more fairly and not to be asked to leave Workers' Party. I think it would be good if he could stand up and do some talking before he is asked to leave WP."

Another noted: "I think a by-election definitely will take up a lot of time. But it would be good for him to stand up and clarify this matter. And personally as a resident here, this shouldn't be treated as very personal."

A third resident commented: "The residents voted for him because they think he is of integrity and he is able to perform his duties as an MP. But then these sort of things happen. So he should take responsibility, step down and should not just keep quiet."

Yet another noted: "It is not really good as he is a public servant. He needs to take responsibility."

One Hougang resident said it is good that the party has cleared the air on the issue but felt that it should have made its position clear earlier.

Mr Yaw has been working the ground in Hougang since joining the party in 2001.

He was previously Mr Low's legislative assistant, and a town councillor, and impressed with his command of the Teochew dialect.

The experience helped him clinch the Hougang seat with 64.8 per cent of the votes in the General Election last May.

Within the party, he also rose quickly through the ranks and was Treasurer until his resignation from the WP leadership last week.

WP MPs are taking turns to attend to Hougang duties.

WP Chairman Sylvia Lim was holding fort at the Hougang Meet-the-People session on Wednesday evening.

But she declined comment, telling reporters that whatever needs to be said was addressed at the press conference, and she was there to meet Hougang residents.
