SINGAPORE – The Ministry of National Development (MND) is looking at unifying the Studio Apartment and two-room flat schemes.

Studio apartments and two-room flats are similar in layout and sizes but the former come with shorter leases.

The Studio Apartment Scheme was introduced in 1998 to provide a smaller flat option for seniors who wanted to right-size at a time when HDB had initially stopped building smaller flats. With the Government resuming the building of two-room flats, Mr Khaw said: “We may be able to use the suggestion (from some Members of Parliament) of shorter leases to rationalise the studio apartment and two-room flat schemes. For example, if we have a new two-room flat scheme, offering varying lease tenure and lease terms, it may allow us to cater to different groups with varying needs, and in the process unify both schemes.”

Speaking during the MND’s Committee of Supply debate today (March 10), he added: “MND and HDB are working on this, and will also gather inputs from the public.”
