SINGAPORE — Teck Ghee residents can look forward to a refurbished community centre — which will be completed by 2017 — and several Home Improvement Programme (HIP) projects in the pipeline, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced yesterday (Aug 15).
The HIP projects will be carried out at Blocks 338 to 340 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, as well as Blocks 401 to 408 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.
The Teck Ghee Community Centre will be upgraded to have bigger spaces and new facilities including an auditorium to hold performances and movie screenings for residents.
Speaking as the guest-of-honour at the Teck Ghee National Day celebration dinner, Mr Lee said: “Year by year, we will seek to make this place better.Year by year, as our children grow up, we will see that we are able to make our lives improve."
The event, held at the open field at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 and 6, drew more than 5,000 residents, grassroots leaders and students from various schools in the vicinity such as Pathlight School, Chong Boon Secondary School and Teck Ghee Primary School. Mr Lee said that he was heartened by the big turnout, and thanked the 500 Teck Ghee Pioneer Generation residents who had joined in the celebrations. “Tonight, we’re not just celebrating Singapore’s birthday, but how far we’ve come... our progress from a Third World to a First World country.”
Turning his attention to the coming General Election, he told the residents: “There are some boundary changes in Ang Mo Kio, and some new faces, but our goals remain the same. Our purpose is to work hard and serve the residents here.” He added: “I will continue to stay in Ang Mo Kio and Teck Ghee – I’m not going anywhere.”
