SINGAPORE — The National University of Singapore this morning (Feb 1) announced plans to use its research and academic strengths to address community issues.

It plans to partner with Central Singapore Community Development Council to delve into the use and maintenance of wheelchairs for the needy, with the National University Health System to cut frequent re-admissions at the National University Hospital, and to review the social impact of an eight-year-old health screening programme by medical students.

These projects will come under its new initiative called NUS CARES (Community Advancement with Research and Education Synergies), part of celebrations for the university’s 110th anniversary.

The celebrations kicked off today at Taman Jurong Community Club with Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam as guest-of-honour.

Taman Jurong is an area where NUS medical students have done health screening for rental flat residents since 2008, said NUS President Tan Chorh Chuan.
