SINGAPORE — The National University of Singapore (NUS) has been ranked 17th globally in a survey on graduate employability, leaping more than 20 places from its 39th position last year.

It is also the only Singapore university to rank among the top 20 in The Global Employability University Ranking 2015. The other Singapore university among the 150 institutions ranked was the Nanyang Technological University at 117th, up from 140th place in 2014.

The Global Employability University Ranking 2015 is designed and commissioned by French human resource consulting agency Emerging and carried out by the German market research firm Trendence. It was conducted with more than 2,200 recruiters from 21 countries, who were asked to vote for the universities that, from their professional experience, were producing the best “ready-for-work” graduates.

Harvard University took top spot, followed by the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, California Institute of Technology and Yale University. Japan’s University of Tokyo was placed 12th, while the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was 14th. China’s Peking University was a spot above NUS, at 16th place.

The international employability survey also asked recruiters to questions about the ideal attributes of graduates and universities. The survey revealed that many recruiters form preferences for certain universities largely based on three factors: Their past experience with graduates, the international exposure graduates had at the universities, and the level of expertise.

NUS Deputy President (Academic Affairs) and Provost, Professor Tan Eng Chye said, “We are delighted that NUS graduates have been recognised by employers globally as among the best in the world. This is a strong affirmation of the quality of NUS graduates and the University’s focus on producing ’future-ready’ graduates. It is a proud moment for NUS and Singapore.”
