SINGAPORE: A 30-year-old man who allegedly injured an 18-year-old victim over a staring incident in Orchard Central was charged in court on Thursday (Jan 4).
The incident, which broke out at about 4am on Jan 1 near Ark11 club in Orchard Central, led to injuries being sustained by another five people who had come across the commotion or had tried to intervene, the police said.
The alleged attacker, Singaporean Adam Hambali Seddon, was handed one count on Thursday of hurting Carmelo Joshua Emilio Esmond D'Sylva with an "unknown instrument for stabbing or cutting".
At the time, Adam was under a remission order for an unnamed previous offence.
According to a police news release, the altercation was caused by a staring incident between Adam and the victim.
Adam allegedly attacked the victim, as well as four other men and a 27-year-old woman who tried to stop the attack or were bystanders.
All six injured in the alleged attack received treatment in hospital and have since been discharged.
The police said Adam fled before they arrived, and he was identified using police cameras and extensive ground enquiries. He was arrested on Jan 2.
Adam was unrepresented and appeared in court on Thursday via video link from his place of remand.
The prosecutor asked for him to be remanded so he could be taken out for raids and to trace any accomplices.
Adam asked if he could get bail, but was told it would be considered after remand was completed. He will return to court on Jan 11.
If convicted of voluntarily causing hurt by a stabbing or cutting instrument, he could be sentenced to up to seven years' jail, fined, caned, or given any combination of these punishments.
He also faces an enhanced sentence for breaching his remission order.
Ark11, the dance club, told CNA that an incident had taken place after it ended operations for the night.
"We are unable to confirm that a knife attack took place, as the incident occurred in the public toilet area of Orchard Central for (levels) 11 and 12. And if the time of the incident was accurate, our club was already closed during the event," the club said.
"As the incident occurred outside our premises after we had closed after ending our operations for the night, we are not privy to any specific information about what happened," it added.
