PM Lee meets with well-wishers at Tanjong Pager CC; pens get-well note for Mr Lee Kuan Yew
SINGAPORE — Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was at Tanjong Pagar Community Club this evening (March 21), where well-wishers have been leaving cards and flowers for former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.
At the Get Well Corner, PM Lee wrote a message saying, "Dear Papa, Hope you get better" on a banner that was filled with good wishes from members of the public. It was signed by both PM Lee and his wife Ho Ching.
The corner was set up by members of Tanjong Pagar CC last evening as a second area where members of the public can express their well wishes for the older Mr Lee. Singaporeans young and old have been leaving gifts, cards and various other forms of well wishes since the area was opened.
In a post on social media tonight, PM Lee said: "My family and I are deeply moved by the outpouring of support. I know my father would be as well."
PM Lee thanked the grassroots leaders and volunteers who set up the corner. He also thanked Tanjong Pagar GRC MP Indranee Rajah and former Tanjong Pagar GRC MP Koo Tsai Kee for showing him around.
Ms Rajah felt that the Get Well Corner was aptly situated at the heart of the Tanjong Pagar division, Mr Lee Kuan Yew's constituency.
"The grassroots themselves wanted to do something...and there have been many residents who have been coming up and saying, where can we leave a card, where can we leave a message," she said.
Organisers said that having the Get Well Corner within the constituency also benefited elderly residents who find the journey to the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) a challenge.
Mr Lee Kuan Yew has been warded at SGH since Feb 5 with severe pneumonia. On Feb 28, the PMO updated that his condition had improved slightly but this week the PMO reported a deterioration in his health on Tuesday and Wednesday. Today, the PMO said Mr Lee's condition has worsened. An area at SGH has also been set aside for members of the public to leave cards and flowers for Mr Lee. ADDITIONAL REPORTING MATTHIAS TAY
