PM Lee ‘very concerned’ over major train disruption

SINGAPORE — Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong today (July 8) said he is “very concerned” over the major disruption to train services yesterday and noted that since the root cause of the power trips have not been identified, “we are still very worried that the problem may recur”.
Mr Lee, who had recently visited the SMRT Bishan Deport to see the maintenance operations and teams, was briefed on the situation at the Land Transport Authority (LTA) Operations Centre this afternoon.
“We are still trying to find out the cause of the problem. LTA and SMRT staff and engineers worked through the night checking trains, tracks and cables,” wrote Mr Lee on Facebook.
“Today fortunately trains ran without a glitch ... Hope we identify and resolve the faults quickly, to prevent further inconvenience to commuters.”
Yesterday evening, the North-South and East-West Lines, the two main MRT lines, were disrupted for more than three hours during the peak period, stranding passengers across the island.
