Police in China detain members of credit-for-sex scam ring that targeted S’poreans

SINGAPORE — More than 40 members of a syndicate behind credit-for-sex scams that targeted Singaporeans have been detained by the police in China.
The arrests were the result of a joint investigation by officers from the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and China’s Criminal Investigation Department of the Ministry of Public Security.
In the first six months of last year, Singapore police received 627 reports of “credit-for-sex” scams, with the victims cheated of about S$1.6 million in total.
Those behind the scams used social media platforms to deceive victims into paying money for non-existent sexual services.
“Investigations revealed that the culprits behind the scams operated from call centres based in China,” the Singapore police said today.
In an operation last December, the Chinese police conducted simultaneous raids at various locations in China and detained 43 members of the syndicate that was responsible for such scams.
Apart from credit-for-sex scams, other online scams that had seen a spike in Singapore in the first six months of last year included Internet love cases and e-commerce cheating cases.
