SINGAPORE — Home-schooled Singaporean students and those studying in private education institutions here will now get public transport concessions, said TransitLink today (Dec 7).

The concessions for Singaporean students studying full-time in private education institutions registered with the Council for Private Education (CPE) will now apply to:

• Students, aged 20 and below, pursuing their GCE Normal, Ordinary or Advanced level qualifications, or an an International Baccalaureate qualification.

• Students pursuing diploma or degree qualifications with a minimum course duration of 24 months

• Students, aged 20 and below, taking special education courses in selected CPE-registered private education institutions

A full-time course requires attendance of at least three hours a day and five days a week, as defined under the Private Education Act.

Home-schooled Singaporean students, aged 20 and below, who are pursuing GCE Normal, Ordinary or Advanced Level qualifications, or an International Baccalaureate qualification are also eligble for the concessions.

Similar to their counterparts in government-funded institutions, these students can now buy monthly concession passes corresponding to their level of study.

If they do not get the passes, secondary-level students can get concessionary trip fares of about 50 per cent discount off adult fares, with the maximum fare payable capped at a distance of 7.2km.

This extension of the concessions is in line with recommendations made by the Fare Review Mechanism Committee, said TransitLink. Among its recommendations, the committee had previously suggested that all Singaporean primary and secondary students, including those who are home-schooled or studying full-time locally, be eligible for student concessions.

Currently, all primary-level Singapore citizens studying in CPE-registered private education institution already receive transport concessions. Post-graduate students studying in private education institutions are not eligible for the concessions, similar to post-graduate students in Government-funded institutions.

TransitLink will engage relevant private education institutions on the details of the concessions and students can submit their applications when they are informed to do so by the institutions. Home-schooled students can contact TransitLink directly at 1800-2255 663.
