SINGAPORE — Reform Party chief Kenneth Jeyaretnam is set to lead the party's four-man team to contest in West Coast GRC, the party announced today (Aug 27).
The three other candidates for West Coast are RP chairman Andy Zhu, property manager Darren Soh and former Democratic Progressive Party member Noraini Yunus.
Businessman Kumar Appavoo will be fielded for the Radin Mas single-seat ward.
Unveiling the party's slate at a hawker centre at Block 79 Telok Blangah Drive this morning, Mr Jeyaretnam said that the slates are not finalised until Nomination Day.
Mr Soh, 45, said he hopes to champion the interests of low-income and elderly Singaporeans if elected. The former People's Action Party grassroots volunteer said he decided to join the Opposition after realising how the ruling party has "failed to help many vulnerable Singaporeans".
Ms Noraini, who had stints in PKMS, the National Solidarity Party and most recently the Democratic Progressive Party before joining RP "a few days before Nomination Day was announced", said she wants to speak out for mental health issues. On her departure from DPP, Ms Noraini said: "(The DPP) was quite supportive of me joining the RP. They have quite a lot of candidates, so we should give them a chance. So I took up (membership in RP) quite last minute."
The party's candidate for the Radin Mas seat, Mr Kumar, said his education background in building administration will enable him to manage a town council in a cost-effective and relevant manner.
RP will unveil its six potential candidates for the Ang Mo Kio GRC tomorrow afternoon.
