Restriction Order against Singaporean who joined MILF militant group allowed to lapse: MHA

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has allowed the Restriction Order (RO) issued against Singaporean Abdul Majid Kunji Mohamad to lapse in June, four years after his release from detention.
Abdul Majid was issued with an RO on June 17, 2013, following his detention under the Internal Security Act (ISA) in June 2011 for being a member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), a militant group based in the southern Philippines.
MHA noted that Abdul Majid, 66, was cooperative and responsive to rehabilitation efforts the last four years, allowing him to be released from RO supervision.
Before his detention, Abdul Majid had undergone military training at the MILF's Camp Abu Bakar in Mindanao, and aided the MILF in procuring funds and weapons components, MHA said in a statement on Thursday (June 29).
According to earlier media reports, Abdul Majid, a businessman, was arrested by Malaysian police on May 6, 2011 under Malaysia's ISA, before his transfer to Singaporean authorities.
Investigations by the Malaysian authorities then revealed that Abdul Majid was involved with the MILF in the late 1990s and early 2000.
He was also reportedly a board member of the Association of Muslim Professionals in Singapore in the 1990s for a year.
