SINGAPORE — At a press conference after Nomination Day yesterday (Sept 1), the National Solidarity Party introduced two of the new faces it is fielding in the General Election - Mr Choong Hon Heng and Mr Lim Tean, who is also the party’s new acting secretary-general, replacing Ms Hazel Poa. The NSP, unlike most other Opposition parties, did not introduce their candidates before Nomination Day.

Already slated to as a potential candidate to contest in this General Election, Mr Lim Tean’s role was unexpectedly amplified when he was appointed acting secretary-general of the National Solidarity Party (NSP) just weeks before Nomination Day.

He replaced Ms Hazel Poa, who left NSP following disagreements with the party’s u-turn decision to contest in MacPherson single-seat ward.

Mr Lim has been an “ordinary member” with the NSP since 2011, but thought that the “time is right” to step forward to stand as a candidate in this General Elections. As acting secretary-general, “my immediate task is to help the CEC (central executive committee) run an effective election campaign,” Mr Lim said at a press conference held after nominations closed yesterday (Sept 1). He is part of the five-man NSP team contesting in Tampines GRC.

He also said that he wants to be the voice for Singaporean workers who have been displaced by the “relentless” influx of foreigners, which led to many locals being underemployed.

“Singapore is the country with the most educated taxi drivers in the world. I’ve encountered many taxi drivers who are so knowledgeable about many things, why are we not deploying them, or putting their talent to better use?” he said.

The legal consultant, who also runs a natural resource company, said that if elected, he will also champion for Singaporeans to have greater control over the usage of their Central Provident Fund savings.
