Shangri-La shooting: Suspect faces another charge
SINGAPORE — One of the two passengers of the car that crashed through a checkpoint near Shangri-La Hotel, forcing the police to open fire and kill the driver, had an additional charge pressed against him yesterday.
Muhammad Syahid Mohamed Yasin, 26, is now accused of instigating Mohamad Taufik Zahar to act rashly and endangering the personal safety of Mr Mohamad Zahid Suhaimi and Ms See Toa Chew Yin that day. TODAY understands these are police officers.
Syahid is said to have shouted: “Jalan, jalan!” (“Go, go!”) to Taufik, causing the latter to accelerate towards Mr Zahid and Ms See Toa and, in the process, crash into a concrete barrier.
Syahid and Mohamed Ismail, 31, were first charged last week with jointly trafficking about 9g of a substance believed to be heroin.
The police said Ismail had been wanted for drug-related offences and for failing to stop at a roadblock. Both he and Syahid have previous drug-related offences.
The dead driver was wanted for failing to attend court for an offence of criminal intimidation and has drug-related antecedents.
Yesterday, the courts granted deputy public prosecutor Yang Ziliang’s application to remand Syahid and Ismail for another week for further investigations.
They also face further charges.
Both will be back in court on June 15. If found guilty of drug trafficking, Syahid and Ismail each face five to 20 years in jail and five to 15 strokes of the cane. If convicted of acting rashly to endanger the personal safety of others, Syahid may be jailed up to six months or fined a maximum of S$2,500.
