SINGAPORE — National carrier Singapore Airlines (SIA) has rolled out free Wi-Fi to passengers travelling in first and business class, as well as its top-of-the-line Suites cabin.

In an email to customers, the airline said the free service will kick in from Wednesday (Feb 14) for all customers travelling in premium classes on its Airbus A380, A350 and Boeing 777-300 Extended Range aircraft.

Passengers flying in Suites and first class will receive 100 megabytes (MB) of free Wi-Fi, while those booked in business class will get 30MB.

Customers who are members of the airline’s premium loyalty programme, the PPS (Priority Passenger Service) Club, will receive 30MB of free Wi-Fi when they fly economy or premium economy class on these aircraft types. Their supplementary-card holders will get the same benefits.

SIA is not the only airline to offer free Wi-Fi onboard. Other major carriers have offered the service for some time.

In 2014, Emirates began offering 10MB of free Wi-Fi to all customers on board most of its A380 superjumbos.

In July last year, the Dubai-based carrier — seen as one of SIA’s major competitors — doubled the limit to 20MB within the first two hours of logging in.

The service is now available on most of its flights. The Middle Eastern carrier said that it provides sufficient data for passengers to browse social-networking sites and send messages.

Top-tier platinum and gold members of its Emirates Skywards loyalty programme receive unlimited Wi-Fi at no charge, irrespective of their class of travel. All members of its loyalty programme who travel in first and business class also get unlimited free Wi-Fi.

Turkish Airlines is another carrier that has introduced free Wi-Fi for passengers. The service is offered to its business class and elite frequent flyers on its Boeing 777-300 Extended Range and some Airbus A330-300 aircraft.
