Singapore confirms 33 new Covid-19 cases, all imported; highest daily tally in 3.5 months
SINGAPORE — Singapore on Saturday (Jan 2) recorded 33 new cases of Covid-19, all of which were imported.
This is the highest single-day tally since Sept 15, when there were 34 cases reported.
The number of coronavirus cases in Singapore stands at 58,662.
In an update on Saturday night, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said that all 33 imported cases were placed on stay-home notices or isolated on arrival in Singapore.
They comprise:
Six Singapore permanent residents who returned from India and Indonesia
Five dependant’s pass holders who arrived from India and the United States
Two long-term visit pass holders who came from Egypt and India
One student’s pass holder who arrived from India
Six work-pass holders who came from India and Myanmar
Twelve work-permit holders who arrived from Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh and the Philippines. Nine of these patients are foreign domestic workers
One short-term visit pass holder who came from Indonesia to visit her Singaporean parent
MOH said that epidemiological investigations were continuing.
In the meantime, all the identified close contacts of the patients have been isolated and quarantined, and will be tested at the start and end of their quarantine periods to detect asymptomatic infections.
“We will also conduct serological tests for the close contacts to determine if the cases could have been infected by them,” MOH added.
UPDATES ON OTHER PATIENTS
Seventeen more patients were discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities as of Saturday. This takes the number of people who have recovered from Covid-19, and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, to 58,476.
There are 61 coronavirus patients who are still hospitalised. Most are stable or improving. One patient is in critical condition under intensive care.
Ninety-six others with mild virus symptoms, or who are clinically well but still test positive for Covid-19, are being isolated and cared for at community facilities.
Twenty-nine people have died in Singapore from complications due to the coronavirus.
