Singapore public holidays: 3 long weekends and a 4-day weekend in 2019
SINGAPORE — There will be three long weekends and a four-day weekend next year based on the Manpower Ministry's (MOM's) list of gazetted public holidays for 2019.
MOM's release on Wednesday (April 4) shows that for next year, the public holidays that will fall on a Friday, Sunday or Monday are: Good Friday (April 19), Vesak Day (May 19), National Day (Aug 9), Hari Raya Haji (Aug 11) and Deepavali (Oct 27).
National Day and Hari Raya Haji fall on the same weekend, making it a four-day stretch.
There were seven long weekends in 2017 and 2015, six in 2016 and only four long weekends in 2018 and 2014.
Under the Employment Act, if a public holiday falls on a Saturday, an employee who is not required to work on a Saturday is entitled to another day off or an extra day's salary in lieu of that public holiday, said the MOM.
Workers required to work on a public holiday are entitled to an extra day's salary at the basic rate of pay, or the employer and employee may mutually agree to substitute a public holiday for another working day.
An employer also has the additional option of granting managers or executives time-off-in-lieu for working on a public holiday. The time off should consist of a mutually agreed number of hours, said the MOM.
