SINGAPORE — SingNet has been fined S$90,000 for a pay-TV disruption on Feb 3 that lasted nearly two hours and affected about 11,000 SingTel TV subscribers, said the Media Development Authority (MDA) today (July 28).
The incident occurred at around 10pm that day. Affected customers were unable to boot up their set-top boxes or access on-demand content.
SingNet was first alerted to the service disruption by customers calling its hotline.
Investigations revealed that the cause of the service disruption was hardware failure, said the MDA.
Although SingNet has undertaken remedial actions following the incident, the MDA pointed out that this is the second time in two years that company had contravened the Quality of Service condition of its Nationwide Subscription Television Service Licence.
“MDA has thus imposed a financial penalty of S$90,000,” the authority said.
In 2013, SingNet was hit with a record S$220,000 fine for a nine-hour disruption of its mio TV service on May 15.
Then, about 26,000 subscribers were unable to watch the channels they had subscribed to with the SingTel subsidiary.
In particular, football fans were vexed they could not watch an English Premier League match that day at the tail-end of a season with a title race that came down to the wire.
