SINGAPORE — In the lead-up to Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Day on July 1, more than 8,500 preschool children will be decorating and penning cards to thank their fathers for defending the nation.

The activity will be part of the curriculum at over 100 preschool centres island-wide over the next week. These “Appreciating NSmen Art Jam” sessions — jointly initiated by Safra and the Association of Early Childhood and Training Services (ASSETS) — are part of a slew of initiatives, announced on Friday (June 22), to show appreciation to national servicemen (NSmen) this year.

The thank-you cards will feature designs of various Singapore icons such as the Merlion, Changi Airport, Housing Development Board flats, the Dragon Playground at Toa Payoh and the Art Science Museum.

The cards also depict servicemen across the Singapore Army, Republic of Singapore Navy, Republic of Singapore Air Force, Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence Force.

The aim is to “promote a greater appreciation of the important role of and the reason they serve – to defend their loved ones”, said Safra.

To show their appreciation of NSmen, the general public can download and share animated Appreciation Graphics Interchange Format (GIFs) from the Safra website (www.safra.sg).

These GIFs were created in collaboration with ITE College Central, School of Design & Media’s Higher Nitec in Interactive Design, as part of a competition which drew 49 submissions.

Other initiatives include more than 130 wide-ranging special SAF Day deals — which will run from this month to December — offered by Safra and over 110 merchant partners.

Apart from discounts at fashion retailers and eateries for example, SAF servicemen can  enjoy free access to swimming pools and EnergyOne gyms at Safra clubs.

They can also receive 50 per cent discounts or 1-for-1 deals at Safra facilities including Kidz Amaze indoor playgrounds, tennis courts, futsal courts, squash courts, multi-purpose courts, games room and BBQ pits.

To enjoy these deals, SAF servicemen have to present their Safra membership card or SAF11B.

To strengthen bonds among NSmen and their families, the annual Safra Sprint Kids Xtreme will be held this weekend at Safra Jurong.
