SINGAPORE — Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) students will undergo a Structured Internship Programme (SIP), which typically lasts six months or longer, after the polytechnic today (May 15) signed Memoranda of Understanding with 50 companies across several sectors.

The SIP is part of the national SkillsFuture initiative. It consists of structured learning outcomes, and clear job scopes. There will also be mentors to guide students.

Addressing graduates from NYP's School of Engineering at a graduation ceremony, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said: “With these enhancements to internships, students will be able to have more purposeful and effective on-the-job training, together with the time necessary to pick up deep skills. They will also be able to immerse themselves deeper in the industry sectors and understand the hard and soft skills that are needed to succeed in the working world.”

Through the SIP, NYP's final-year students will be matched with industry mentors who will guide and advise them as they undergo real-world training and industry-relevant projects.

The 50 companies come from various sectors such as information technology, engineering and chemical and life sciences.

This year, 5,459 students will graduate from NYP, with graduation ceremonies for its seven schools held from today to May 21.
