Taped durian art: Singaporean vendor pokes fun at the viral ‘duct-taped banana’ masterpiece
A Singaporean durian seller came up with his own version of Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan's ‘duct-taped banana’ artwork (left) using durian.
SINGAPORE – A Singaporean durian seller has poked fun at the US$120,000 (S$163,000) banana artwork by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan which was displayed at the Art Basel show in Miami Beach in the US over the weekend.
The art piece, titled "Comedian", was nothing but a single piece of banana duct-taped to the gallery wall.
The artwork quickly became the most talked-about shortly after it was sold to a French collector for a whopping US$120,000.
Then, Georgian-born American artist David Datuna walked up to the extortionately-priced banana, removed it from the wall and ate it, much to the surprise of spectators.
On Monday (Dec 9), a durian and desserts café in Singapore, 99 Old Trees, took to Facebook to poke fun at the artwork by duct-taping a durian to the wall.
The shop owner had also jokingly put up the thorny masterpiece titled “Durian Tape to White Wall” for sale at S$163,056.
The Facebook post, which has been shared over 1,100 times, was also accompanied by a cheeky caption. It said: “Looks like Art, Smells like Fart”.
"(The art piece) includes duct tape and Pahang MSW (Mao Shan Wang durian) 2.15kg. Wall not included," the caption said.
In the comments section, many Facebook users found the joke hilarious and even praised the shop owner for the humour.
The Singaporean café was not the only one poking fun at the art piece. Other social media users also fired up their artistic flair to come up with their own version of duct-tape-inspired artwork. MALAY MAIL
