SINGAPORE: Two 16-year-old boys have been arrested after carrying out a toy gun prank at a retail shop in Yishun.

The police said they were alerted to the incident along Yishun Street 22 at about 7am on Monday (Apr 17).

One of the teenagers allegedly approached the cashier counter to make payment for an item. He then took out a toy gun and pointed it at the employee, said the police in a media release on Tuesday.

The other teenager was recording the incident.

"Upon hearing the staff shouting, they started laughing and revealed that the gun was fake," said the police.

"Preliminary investigations revealed that the teenagers had purportedly hatched a plan to scare the staff with the toy gun for fun."

The boys were arrested about three hours later after they were identified with the aid of CCTV.

The toy gun, what the teenagers wore and a mobile phone that was used to record the prank were seized.

Threatening another person with any injury, with intent to cause alarm to that person, amounts to an offence of criminal intimidation, said the police. The offence is punishable with a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.

"The police have zero tolerance towards such acts that cause unnecessary alarm towards the general public," they added.
