National Day of Remembrance for Sabah quake victims
Flags at government buildings will be flown at half-mast today (June 8), in remembrance of the eight from Singapore who were killed in the Sabah earthquake last Friday while trekking on Mount Kinabalu. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had declared today a day of remembrance, and a minute of silence will also be observed at the start of the day at SEA Games venues. Meanwhile, search-and-rescue operations continue for the two missing Singaporeans, who were also on the trip.
Case to be heard for car passengers involved in fatal shooting
The two passengers in a car involved in a fatal shooting near Shangri-La Hotel last week who were charged with drug trafficking, will have their cases heard in court today. Mohamed Ismail, 31, and Muhammad Syahid Mohamed Yasin, 26, were in the red Subaru Impreza driven by Mohamed Taufik Zahar, 34, who was shot dead by the police after he accelerated the car towards police officers in the hotel’s direction when questioned by officers on May 31.
Dr Wan Azizah to try to unite Malaysia’s opposition coalition
Malaysian opposition leader Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will try to play peace-maker today to convince two allies to keep the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) opposition pact intact. This came after Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) passed a contentious motion during its general assembly to cut off ties with the Democratic Action Party (DAP), which led the three-party coalition all but split. “We want (PR) to be together”, said Dr Wan Azizah yesterday. She heads PR lynchpin party Parti Keadilan Rakyat.
SEA Games (Football): Young Lions face Cambodia
Singapore faces Cambodia at the Jalan Besar Stadium tonight in their third Group A match of the SEA Games football competition, where they need a win to keep alive their hopes of reaching the semi-finals. But Cambodia will not be a walkover despite their heavy defeat to Indonesia. The Cambodians beat the Philippines 3-1, a team that Singapore struggled to break down and only won 1-0.
SEA Games (Table tennis): Paddlers attempt to reach finals for team events
Even though Singapore will not have a clean sweep of the gold medals in table tennis, the Republic’s paddlers will still be looking to reach the men’s and women’s team finals at the Singapore Indoor Stadium this evening.
SEA Games (Swimming): Schooling looks to bolster gold medal haul
Joseph Schooling and company will return to the OCBC Aquatic Centre this evening in search of more gold medals in the swimming competition of the SEA Games. Schooling has won two golds so far and is attempting to win all nine events that he has entered for at the biennial meet.
