Two charged with wrecking Upper Serangoon porridge eatery

SINGAPORE — Two of the three people arrested for wrecking a porridge restaurant along Upper Serangoon Road were charged in a district court on Wednesday (May 31).
Pang Pei Pei, 40, and Tan Sung Meng, 46, were each charged with committing a rash act which endangered the safety of others by allegedly throwing bowls, tables and chairs inside Heng Long Teochew Porridge restaurant.
The incident, which took place at about 3.45am last Saturday, caused the eatery at 1006 Upper Serangoon Road to suffer some S$5,000 in damages.
Pang and Tan, both Singaporeans, are accused of acting together with Yeoh Keng Hock, who is yet to be charged. The trio were arrested earlier on Monday and Tuesday.
An earlier police news release said the suspects were captured on closed-circuit television overturning a table at the eatery. In court yesterday, prosecutors sought to remand Pang for two weeks at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for psychiatric assessment.
However, this was opposed by her lawyer K Ravendran, who argued that Pang, who has a five-month-old baby, has not made care arrangements for the child. The district judge granted her a bail of S$5,000 to make the necessary childcare arrangements before being remanded at IMH.
Pang, who has a history of psychiatric treatment, has not been attending follow-up appointments or taking her medication, the court heard. Her case will be heard again on June 7.
Tan, who was not represented, was also offered bail of S$5,000, and will appear in court on June 21.
If convicted of committing a rash act, both Pang and Tan could be jailed up to six months or fined up to S$2,500, or both.
