SINGAPORE — A 44-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman were arrested in a drug bust on a Yishun flat on Monday (Sept 9) after drug-related equipment was found at the Parcel Post Section of SingPost Centre, the authorities said on Tuesday.

Officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), who raided the unit in the vicinity of Yishun Street 31, found glass apparatus — suspected to be for smoking drugs — along with two cannabis pot plants as well as various equipment and written instructions on the cultivation of the plants.

Details of the raid were provided in a joint statement by CNB and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

Officers also found a makeshift greenhouse for the cultivation of the cannabis plants within the flat, the statement said.

“Two suspected drug offenders, a 44-year-old male and a 52-year-old female, both Singaporeans, were arrested within the unit. Investigations are ongoing,” it added.

The statement did not indicate when the drug-related equipment was detected by the ICA officers at the SingPost Centre.

In the statement, the CNB reminded the public that cannabis is a Class A controlled drug listed under Singapore’s Misuse of Drugs Act.

The consumption, possession, trafficking, import or export of any controlled drugs is an offence.

The cultivation of the cannabis plant is an offence under the same Act. Any person convicted of cultivating the cannabis plant may face a maximum of 20 years’ jail, or S$40,000 fine, or both, said the authorities.

Other high profile drug manufacturing and cultivation cases have emerged in Yishun in recent years.

In December 2017, the authorities stumbled on an illegal drug manufacturing lab in Yishun. A team of HazMat (Hazardous Materials) specialists from the Singapore Civil Defence Force were called in to assist CNB officers who noticed a pungent smell in the lab which they had raided on Yishun Industrial Street 1.

The HazMat officers, who were fully suited up, entered the lab and their handheld detectors discovered the air within the room was hazardous.

About 2.6 kg of synthetic cannabis and 500g of unknown powdery substance were seized.

In 2013, an 18-year-old was placed on probation for three years for cultivating six cannabis plants at his home in Yishun and for other drug-related offences.

His lawyers said he had thrown the seeds and stems of a cannabis plant into a pot out of curiosity, to see if they would grow, and they did.
