SINGAPORE — In an effort to widen outreach to netizens and the younger electorate, the Workers' Party has launched "The Working Show", a series of YouTube videos where members discuss current affairs and issues the party stands for.
The first episode that aired on Wednesday (Feb 17) — set at the void deck of a block of HDB flats — stars Non-Constituency Member of Parliament and WP Central Executive Council (CEC) member Leon Perera as "guest speaker" and was hosted by CEC member Kenneth Foo and Youth Wing executive committee member Cheryl Loh.
Meant as a look back at key events over the past year, the seven-minute video discussed the General Election and the Hepatitis C outbreak at the Singapore General Hospital last year. The WP had called for a Committee of Inquiry (COI) in the wake of the outbreak last year, and the video saw Mr Perera discuss the legal powers that a COI holds.
Rounding up the episode was a series of "fun facts" about the party's history and members.
The party plans to release one episode of The Working Show every three to four months, and topics will vary according to public interest, said a WP representative in response to media queries.
Episodes are posted on WP's YouTube channel, which has been set up for about three years and usually airs rally speeches and interviews with party members. It has close to 7,200 subscribers.
"We are experimenting with this initiative, and (will) work on improving it as we go along...Politics can be rather heavy and dry. This is our way of making it light-hearted and easy to understand," said the WP representative.
The series is the latest in the party's recent efforts to up its social media game, which included launching a new mobile app in August last year and revamping its website during the election.
