SINGAPORE: Shanti Pereira set a new national record in the 100m heats at the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Tuesday (Aug 2) and qualified for the semi-finals of the event.

Pereira's time of 11.48s eclipsed her previous best and national record of 11.58s, which was set in 2019. She set a new personal best and national record, said the Singapore National Olympic Council.

Pereira finished fifth in her heat, which was won by Grace Nwokocha with a time of 10.99s.

In the other heats, Singapore's Kugapriya Chandran clocked 12.34s, a season's best, while Bernice Liew equalled her personal best with a time of 12.12s, but both did not make the semi-finals.

Earlier this year, Pereira clocked a time of 11.62s to clinch a silver medal in the same event at the 31st Southeast Asian Games. She also won gold in the women's 200m, setting a new national record with a time of 23.52s.

In the men's 100m heats, Singapore's Marc Brian Louis (10.51s), Joshua Chua (10.67s) and Ian Koe (10.91s) all featured but did not progress to the semi-finals.
