SINGAPORE: Singapore clinched the women's table tennis team gold at the Commonwealth Games on Monday (Aug 1) after beating Malaysia 3-0 in the final.

This is Singapore’s first gold medal of the 2022 Games and means the team recaptured the gold medal that evaded them in 2018 when they were beaten by India in the final.

Singapore beat Australia 3-0 in the semi-finals on Sunday, while Malaysia edged past Wales 3-2.

In the opening doubles, Zhou Jingyi and Zeng Jian dropped the first game, before storming back in convincing fashion to take the tie 7-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-5.

At Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre, world number 16 Feng Tianwei then extended Singapore's lead when she beat Alice Chang 11-9, 11-1, 11-7.

Zeng wrapped up the win, beating Ho Ying 11-3, 11-4, 8-11,11-5.

Singapore's men's team will face England for a spot in the final later on Monday.

This is Singapore’s second medal of this edition of the Games after swimmer Teong Tzen Wei clinched a silver in the men’s 50m butterfly final on Saturday.
