6.7 magnitude earthquake shakes part of Indonesia, causing scattered damage

Central Indonesia’s Sulawesi island was struck by a powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday (Jun 16).

Strong tremors sent people fleeing into open areas in and around Palu, a city of about 400,000 people.

Several hospitals evacuated patients, some still connected to IV drips, as a safety measure.

Buildings suffered scattered damage, with partially collapsed roofs, shattered walls and debris littering streets.

Many people described scenes of panic. Information on the damage, possible casualties and displaced people was still being gathered.

People moved away from coastal areas despite officials confirming there was no tsunami threat. Many Sulawesi residents are haunted by the magnitude-7.5 earthquake that devastated Palu in 2018, which killed more than 4,000.
