Dogs allowed: Animal hospital opens doors to Japan quake survivors and their pets
After being turned away from an evacuation centre because of her pets, Tomoko Takaoka spent the first night after the earthquake sleeping in her car with dogs Ku and Sheri.
Social media posts led Takaoka to Ryunosuke Animal Hospital in downtown Kumamoto, where classrooms at its veterinary nurse training school had been converted into temporary housing for evacuees and their pets.
Classrooms were transformed into temporary shelter, with separate spaces for families with cats and dogs.
