NParks seizes 101 illegally kept wild animals in islandwide raid, with 13 found dead
NParks seized 101 non-native wild animals in simultaneous raids on the homes of six people across Singapore. The six are under investigation for the illegal sale or possession of wildlife.
The animals included newts, lizards, pythons, tarantulas and turtles. Several are protected under CITES, including the armadillo girdled lizard, axolotl, ball python, pig-nosed turtle and rosy boa.
Thirteen animals were found dead, possibly due to poor or unsuitable living conditions. Many others were in poor health.
One leopard gecko had to be euthanised on animal welfare grounds. Some other animals were found with mild metabolic bone disease, which weakens bones due to nutritional deficiency.
The 87 remaining animals are being cared for at NParks’ Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation, where they will undergo quarantine for up to six months as their origins are unknown.
