Sarawakians grapple with worst haze since 2019
Sarawak is experiencing its worst haze since 2019, with transboundary haze linked to forest fires in neighbouring Indonesia. In Serian, the Air Pollutant Index exceeded 500 on Friday (Sep 4), prompting a state of emergency.
The haze has disrupted daily life across Sarawak. A total of 647 schools across 12 districts will close for five days, while outdoor events have been cancelled and poor visibility has disrupted some flights.
Residents are also feeling the health effects. Clinics in Kuching have reported a surge in patients with respiratory symptoms, while masks have sold out at many pharmacies.
