Trump and Xi meet in Beijing
President Donald Trump arrived at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday (May 14), where he was greeted by Chinese President Xi Jinping.
President Trump received a red carpet welcome with military band fanfare, a gun salute and a host of cheering schoolchildren.
The American delegation included elite businessmen such as Apple’s Tim Cook, Tesla's Elon Musk and Nvidia's Jensen Huang.
During bilateral talks inside the Great Hall of the People, President Xi struck a conciliatory tone, saying common China–US interests outweigh differences.
President Trump said ties would be “better than ever”. The bilateral talks ran for more than two hours.
The leaders later visited the Temple of Heaven, a centuries-old complex where Ming and Qing emperors prayed for good harvests.
In the evening, the American president was hosted at a state banquet.
