Typhoon Dolphin weakens but disrupts travel in east China
Typhoon Dolphin brought heavy rain to eastern China after making two landfalls along the coast of Zhejiang province on Sunday (Aug 9).
The storm triggered a top-level alert, with more than a million people evacuated. The port city of Wenzhou alone relocated over 900,000 residents and opened more than 1,500 emergency shelters.
Travel was heavily disrupted, with more than 1,000 flights cancelled over the weekend. On Monday, 943 flights were cancelled at Shanghai’s two main passenger airports.
Many local trains in Shanghai were suspended, while Hangzhou resumed subway services on Monday after some operations were halted a day earlier.
Authorities issued their most severe flash flood alert for parts of Zhejiang, while heavy rain is expected across parts of east and central China.
