Adjournment motion on empowering informed post-secondary school choices

30:23 Min

Give secondary school students hands-on exposure to tertiary courses to help them make better decisions on what is the right fit. This would reduce the risk of mismatch, disengagement, “pathway regret” and ultimately even underemployment, said MP David Hoe. He proposed a “curiosity credit wallet” for every student from Secondary 1. They can “buy” curated taster sessions designed by ITE, polytechnics, universities or specialised institutions - six to eight of these in various clusters by Secondary 4. This could prove particularly important for students from less well-resourced families or who lack professional networks, he said. Replying in parliament on Thursday (May 7), Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education Syed Harun Alhabsyi said his ministry is open to ideas like Mr Hoe’s, but that students do not have to find the perfect fit at age 16 to succeed in life. He outlined how the Ministry of Education currently guides students, including the Applied Learning Programme that helps them connect classroom learning to real-world careers and targeted options for those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
