Adjournment motion on reclaiming childhood in the AI era
If Singapore is serious about reducing children's screen dependency, it must focus not only on restrictions, but also on replacements. MP Ng Shi Xuan said this in parliament on Thursday (Sep 10) as he moved an adjournment motion on enabling kids to reclaim childhood in the AI era. He offered four recommendations - strengthen community programmes as meaningful alternatives to screens; improve playgrounds and recognise them as developmental infrastructure; strengthen screen time guidance and social media safeguards for children below 18; and consider expanding the Grow Well SG framework into a broader national child development framework. Responding, Minister of State for Digital Development and Information Rahayu Mahzam said Mr Ng’s ideas align with many government efforts that already exist and can be scaled up. MDDI will continue to build on the work, in cooperation with other ministries and taking into account lessons from other countries, she said.
