Adjournment motion on reforming CCA access in our schools

Singapore should make its system for Co-curricular Activities (CCAs) genuinely open and extend the same generosity of spirit that has guided every other recent reform of its schools. MP Kenneth Tiong, who made this call in an adjournment motion in parliament on Tuesday (Mar 3), proposed reforms in several areas. One suggestion is to let trials determine who makes the competitive squad and who gets to participate. Every student should be able to join at least one of his or her top CCA choices. CCA selection trials should sort students into a competitive squad and a developmental programme, not into participants. Responding, Acting Culture, Community and Youth Minister and Senior Minister of State for Education David Neo said Singapore’s CCA policies have evolved in tandem with the broader vision of education. He assured the House that the government will continue to review and ensure that students continue to be able to access their favourite CCAs, and that CCAs continue to nurture both the heart and mind.
