Adjournment motion on rethinking preventive health for better outcomes

33:01 Min

Singapore should rethink preventive health to achieve better outcomes, as the incidence of some dangerous chronic conditions has risen steadily in recent decades. Making the point in Parliament on Monday (Feb 14), MP Leon Perera offered several suggestions. They include rewarding good health choices, such as giving subsidies for MediShield Life premiums to those who go for regular health screenings or exercise; providing low-income families with aid in the form of a “frictionless digital currency" to buy healthier food products; and not just paying healthcare providers for treating the sick but also for encouraging people not to get sick in the first place. In response, Senior Minister of State for Health Koh Poh Koon elaborated on preventive health efforts that have been underway for several years. He said these efforts now need to be redoubled, to regain the momentum and improvements lost due to the impact of COVID-19. He also urged the public to play an active role in taking responsibility for their own health.
