Alex Yam on Community Disputes Resolution (Amendment) Bill
Why will the new Community Relations Unit (CRU) not operate 24/7, seeing as many neighbour disputes take place out of hours and may require immediate intervention? Are there plans for the CRU pilot to include issues other than noise and hoarding? How will Community Relations Officers and auxiliaries be appointed, how will residents be able to identify them and what safeguards are in place to ensure they use their powers appropriately? These were some questions raised by MP Alex Yam in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 12). He noted that the proposed enhancements to the Community Disputes Management Framework strengthen but do not replace the community’s role in resolving disputes. With that in mind, he asked what community-building efforts are being planned to promote more harmonious neighbourhoods.
