Alex Yam on Israel-Hamas conflict

19:02 Min

“Horrific, tragic, unfathomable and on occasion unforgivable,” said MP Alex Yam of the violence in the Israel-Hamas conflict, especially on innocent civilians like children and the elderly. “So let us for a moment agree that, whatever our views on the conflict, that no civilian should be considered as a legitimate deliberate target in any conflict,” he said in Parliament on Monday (Nov 6). He also condemned those responsible for the terrorist acts and violations of international law. Mr Yam said what Hamas did on Oct 7 is terrorism. Israel has pursued a legitimate right to defend itself but this must come with “proportionality” - by taking all possible measures to minimise losses in the civilian population. Therefore, Hamas must cease all terrorist attacks and release all hostages immediately. Israel, in its pursuit of a legitimate defence, must adhere fully to the norms of humanitarian law in the conduct of war and avoid the collective punishment of a population. Both sides must minimise the effect of conflict on all civilians and allow full access to humanitarian aid, he said. Mr Yam said Singapore's unwavering commitment to international law is a cornerstone of its foreign policy. He also stressed the need to recognise and address the potential toxicity that may seep into Singapore. He warned “we are at risk” and stressed the need for an open and honest conversation about the situation. “Misguided beliefs and distorted narratives can further escalate tensions and lead to divisions within our community and, collectively, we must redouble our efforts to ensure that Singaporeans have access to reliable sources of information and are equipped to discern fact from fiction,” he said. “By doing so, we empower Singaporeans to make informed decisions and engage in constructive dialogues, even in the face of contentious global issues,” he added. Mr Yam said the Israel-Hamas conflict is complex and while there is no simple solution, Singaporeans can play their part by not complicating it even further. “May Singapore continue to stand as a shining example of tolerance and mutual understanding in our multicultural, multiracial and multi-religious community - a testament to the strength that emerges from our diversity,” he said. It is therefore important to uphold and protect this precious legacy for it is the bedrock of Singapore’s peace and security. “Let us unite our voices in our collective call for a safer and more harmonious world and for a resolution to the current conflict in Israel and Gaza,” he said.
