Amy Khor on smoking corners in hawker centres and food establishments
New and redeveloped hawker centres have been smoke-free since 2015 and applications for smoking corners at food establishments have not been accepted since June 2017. Existing smoking corners are allowed to remain until an eatery’s licence is terminated or cancelled. There are currently 21 hawker centres and about 560 eateries with smoking corners, down from more than 950 smoking corners in June 2017. Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Amy Khor gave those updates in Parliament on Monday (Apr 4) in reply to an MP’s question. She said there are currently no plans to require designated smoking corners to be enclosed or retrofitted with special air filters.
