02:44 Min

Malaysia's national car Proton has launched the country's first electric vehicle plant. Built at a cost of about US$20 million, the plant has the capacity to produce about 20,000 EVs annually in the first phase. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said this reflects the close cooperation between Malaysia and China through Proton and its strategic partner, Geely. To ease logistical hurdles, the government is planning to build a spur line connecting Tanjung Malim Automotive Hi-Tech Valley to the existing rail network. This, as Malaysia seeks to become an EV hub by creating its own high-tech automotive ecosystem. Melissa Goh reports.
