Mumbai's mangroves under threat as city expands

03:59 Min

Every monsoon, heavy rains inundate parts of Mumbai, flooding roads and disrupting daily life across India's financial capital. As the city pushes ahead with major infrastructure projects, conservationists warn that clearing mangrove forests could leave it more vulnerable to storm surges and climate change. Authorities say construction of a new 26km coastal road will impact about 45,000 mangrove trees. The trees' dense root systems absorb energy from ocean waves, reduce the devastating impact of storm surges and help stabilise land. Rebecca Bundhun reports from Mumbai.
