Budget 2022 debate: Leong Mun Wai on 'new financial compact' to help Singaporeans
Instead of handing out "dribs and drabs" to Singaporeans, the Government could have provided a lump sum to top up the average worker's gross wage to S$2,250 per month, said NCMP Leong Mun Wai. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Feb 28), he explained why the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) does not support Budget 2022. He said there is no need for a GST hike, as Singapore is in a strong financial position and Singaporeans need all the help they can get. He urged the Government to focus on fiscal efficiency and discipline. He said there is ample room to cut down on existing spending, so that there is no need for a GST hike. Mr Leong also criticised the approach of handing out short-term "goodies" to Singaporeans instead of using permanent schemes, saying it will not produce resilient Singaporeans, but dependent Singaporeans. PSP believes Singapore can have a "new financial compact" which is better than Budget 2022, he said.
