19:50 Min

The Russia-Ukraine conflict will impact Singapore, as well as global economic recovery, said MP Liang Eng Hwa. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Feb 28), he asked the Finance Minister if the situation in Ukraine would have a bearing on the Budget which he unveiled on Feb 18. Turning to Budget 2022, Mr Liang said it gave social compact a refreshed and more tangible feel. He highlighted three deep-seated issues the world faces - widening income and wealth inequality, stagnation or very slow wage growth for low-wage workers, and the climate change crisis. He said Budget 2022 will stand out for how Singapore has made bold and decisive moves to tackle these issues head-on to build a fair, inclusive and sustainable society. He stressed the need to have a "clear mind" to find the means to fund the efforts to strengthen the foundations of Singapore's long-term funding in a fair and sustainable way.
