Budget 2023 debate: Foo Mee Har on the need to stay competitive and relevant in a new world order
Singapore’s continued growth in the new era of global development is not guaranteed. It is predicated on the country’s ability to steer industries, enterprises and workers towards long-term, sustainable growth. Making the point in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 22), MP Foo Mee Har said in the global battle for talent, employers must embrace a new normal where the balance of power has shifted to employees. She urged companies to “up their game” to attract and retain staff. Ms Foo also said strong Government intervention is needed in the area of lifelong learning to set standards and provide resources beyond training subsidies. She welcomed the introduction of Jobs-Skills Integrators to better link workers’ training to securing good jobs. Budget 2023 also “sets the tone for the years to come”, said Ms Foo, with decisive moves to address Singaporeans’ needs and aspirations and give Singapore’s social compact a significant boost. Noting that Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong did not shy away from warning about the sustainability of such Government support, she asked for his assessment of the risks of Government handouts creating a vicious escalation in prices, as has happened in other countries.
