Budget 2023 debate: Mariam Jaafar on building resilience in an inclusive way

15:00 Min

We are living in a time of uncertainty, but it is an environment that Singapore is prepared to handle if we can build resiliency. However, care must be taken to ensure that resilience is built in an inclusive way without resulting in widening inequalities where some people and businesses are better able to bounce back and exploit uncertainty than others. MP Mariam Jaafar said this in Parliament on Thursday (Feb 23). She shared the need to recognise that there are Singaporeans who are being pushed to their limits of adversity more than others. She highlighted three groups - middle-income Singaporeans who have lost their jobs, ex-offenders and Singaporeans in debt - for whom building resilience can be particularly difficult, and suggested ways in which the Government can provide them with a “stronger trampoline”.
