Budget 2023 debate: Raj Joshua Thomas on strengthening tripartism as a pillar of economic resilience
Singapore’s unique brand of tripartism has underpinned its economic success and labour relations for decades and should be built upon as the country faces a new era of evolving challenges. NMP Raj Joshua Thomas issued this call in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 22). In particular, he said sectoral trade associations should be more involved on tripartite platforms and the Singapore National Employers Federation cannot be seen as being able to speak on behalf of individual industries. This is especially so when adverse positions may arise, such as with clustering being done under the refreshed Industry Transformation Maps. With a view to strengthening trade associations and chambers, Mr Thomas sought more funding for their secretariats and allowing them to be involved in employment dispute resolution processes, especially as many businesses grapple with industry transformation.
